What is Cacao?
Cacao is a Sacred Plant Medicine that has been used for healing and in important rituals and ceremonies in Mexico and South America for thousands of years.
The oldest cacao vessels have been found in Ecuador, and date all the way back to 5300 years ago.
It’s important to know that 99% of the Indigenous people who revered cacao were wiped out by disease, genocide, and systemic cultural violence at the hands of colonizers. So when you use Cacao in a spiritual context, or sit with people in a circle, both you and the facilitator should understand and acknowledge the Indigenous loss.
The colonizer paradigm looks at Cacao and all Plant Medicine as a resource to be used. The original Indigenous stewards understood that Cacao, the Rainforest, and all things have a Spirit that needs to be honored, cared for, and respected.
Traditionally, Midwives used cacao for womb healing, PMS, and birth. Cacao was also used as currency, in important ceremonies, and in everyday life and food.
Traditionally, Cacao was also used as a medicine base; healers would add other herbs to it.
Anthropologists used to believe that Cacao was only used by royalty and very important people. But with the help of Indigenous voices, we now know that Cacao is a medicine for the people. Meaning people of all social statuses and places enjoyed cacao as food, medicine, and nourishment.
If you are looking for more specifically Indigenous Wisdom about Cacao, we highly recommend The Mayan Wisdom Project, as they are an Indigenous led organization that is working to help the Western world understand the Medicine and Historical/Cultural context of Cacao.

How Does Cacao Nourish the Body?
Cacao contains many chemical compounds and vitamins that nourish the body.
There are historical records of Spanish Colonizer’s commenting on the nourishing aspect of cacao, saying: “He who drinks a cup of this liquid, no matter how far he walks, can go a whole day without eating anything else.”
Cacao is an Elixir for health, and was used by warriors for strength and vitality.
In Indigenous populations who still revere and consume cacao, there is a marked decrease in High Blood Pressure and Heart Disease.
In ancient times, Cacao was also used as a cure for many ailments. From childbirth, to insomnia, to cancer.
Cacao Chemical Compounds for Healing:

- Polyphenols: are antioxidants that help fight cardiovascular disease and improve wellness and health.

- CACAO SHOULD NEVER be consumed with milk, as the casein protein in milk actively blocks your body from absorbing the medicinal components of Cacao.

Our Cacao is hand-cracked and hand-poured with ceremony and intention.
We pray, make offerings to the Land, play music, sing, and craft this medicine in a sacred space.
Not only is our cacao intentional, but it is also single origin, pure, and the medicine we offer supports the original stewards of the land and caretakers of this medicine.
We make small, hand-crafted 10-pound batches. Each batch requires about 20 hours of work.
FAQ
How Can I Purchase Some Cacao?
Fill out the contact form below, or DM us on social media. Because we make small, ceremonial batches, we don’t always have cacao on hand. But when we do it’s extremely fresh and perfect;y nourishing for your body and spirit.
How Does Cacao Nourish the Spirit?
Many modern Western people say that cacao is a “Mama.” And lean on the medicine as a nourishing feminine medicine.
We, however, honor the powerful, genderless spirit of this medicine. While it might feel nourishing like a mother, it is also wise like a grandfather.
Cacao helps you to connect to your intuition, heart, and spirit.
All plant medicines have the ability to help us change our energy and break us out of our habits and routines.
If we sit with them with respect and with an open mind, they bring us wisdom and help us to heal.
Is Cacao Cultural Appropriation?
Traditional Indigenous people do not have “Cacao Ceremonies.” Cacao was used for important rituals, like Birth, Weddings, and Sacred calendar rites. But there is no such thing as a “Cacao Ceremony” in an Indigenous sense.
Cultural Appropriation is defined as Settler Society colonizing and profiting off of Minority Cultures with no respect, knowledge, homage, or care for that Culture.
At Four Wind, we do not appropriate the Medicine by buying it from an unsustainable source. We pay a fair price for the cacao beans that we buy, and we actually make and process the medicine ourselves. This is a process that takes over 20 hours, and we can only make small batches of 10 lbs at a time.
We also don’t claim to be Mayan healers or to be holding Indigenous Cacao ceremonies that have some great, ancient context.
When we gather in ceremony, we are honoring all of our common human ancestors who were Animists, and who sat in ceremony for healing.
How do people Appropriate Cacao:
- Purchase chocolate that is made from enslaved children.
- Support major chocolate companies that continue to destroy the environment with no care or respect for the Spirit of the Plant or the Earth.
- Claim Mayan or other Indigenous heritage that does not belong to you and your lineage.
- Consuming medicine without understanding and acknowledging the deep Indigenous loss, and the history of Colonial Violence.
